A series of scenic landscape photos showing mountains, glaciers, and snowy terrain in a cinematic panoramic style.
Feature Documentary | 76 mins

Split follows the physical and mental journeys of best friends Tom and James - both environmentalists, both airline pilots and both inexperienced in the arctic - as they embark and reflect on a remote splitboard expedition in Greenland.

With humour and depth, filmmaker and expedition teammate Charlotte follows how each navigates their minds, passions and purpose in a time of crisis.

director's statement

“When I first agreed to join the expedition to Greenland as a filmmaker - I thought the resulting film would just be about the adventurous journey itself.

Upon meeting Tom and James - the protagonists - this entirely changed.

Their characters, relationship and story captured me in such a way I felt there was no option but to take the time to make a deeper, more character driven film.

The theme of contradiction and dichotomy arose in so many aspects of the story; it fitted perfectly with the nature of the expedition itself which was to be the longest splitboard journey. The ‘split’ appears in how Tom and James differ in their personalities, their mindsets and their approaches to living as environmental activists and airline pilots.

It particularly resonated with me, and I hope it will with others as we all try to navigate our minds, passions and purpose in a time of climate and mental health crisis.

Naturally, I seem to tell stories in a humorous way - so despite dealing with what can be heavy topics, I hope that Split provides comedy, thoughtful moments & ultimately hope”

Protect Our Winters UK is proud to endorse Split

Words by Marjolein Thickett, Partnerships Manager at POW UK

At its heart, Split explores a tension many of us in the outdoor community feel every day. We care deeply about the places we spend time in, yet we are all navigating the realities of modern life, work and travel while trying to reduce our impact.

The film thoughtfully captures the messy, nuanced space between intention and action, and the climate anxiety that can come with it. Through the perspectives of its two protagonists, it asks an important question: is change best driven from within the systems we are part of, or by stepping outside them?

At Protect Our Winters, we believe the most important step is turning awareness into action. That means using your voice, supporting policy change and backing campaigns that accelerate solutions, such as our current Clean Miles petition for better low-carbon travel options to outdoor places.

For many people, the next step after films like this is understanding where they can make a real difference. Climate knowledge and programmes help people understand where they can have the greatest impact and how to turn concern into practical action.

Split is an invitation to reflect, to talk honestly about the choices we face, and ultimately to take the next step.
